A clearer first conversation with your accountant

A short, well-organised enquiry can make it easier to work out what support you need. You do not need to send your complete financial records to begin.

Start with the question

Describe what brought you here: a tax return, a change in your work, a new business or a reporting problem. Include what you would like to understand by the end of the conversation.

Give a little context

Mention whether the enquiry is personal or business-related, the relevant period and any important timing. A brief outline is more useful than a large bundle of unexplained documents.

Keep sensitive records for a secure channel

Your first website enquiry should not include a TFN, identity documents, bank details or full tax records. Ask how information should be shared after the required work has been discussed.

Ask how the engagement will work

Clarify the scope, fees, responsibilities and next steps. If ongoing support matters to you, raise it early so the proposed arrangement can reflect that.

This article is general information about preparing for an enquiry. It is not personal tax, legal or financial advice. The appropriate next step depends on your circumstances.
